Dating app industry faces shifts as users move away from traditional platforms
The digital dating landscape is undergoing significant shifts as major platforms face user dissatisfaction and new, non-profit alternatives emerge. In the Czech Republic, students Petra Obšel and Daniel Pelánek from Brno University of Technology have launched Brndr, a non-profit dating platform designed specifically for students. Brndr aims to avoid the profit-driven models of mainstream apps by eliminating advertisements, paid features, and popularity-based algorithms. The project focuses on privacy, security through end-to-end encryption, and matchmaking based on shared interests rather than swiping mechanics.
Concurrently, established dating giants are struggling with a decline in user engagement and market value. Major players like Match Group and Bumble have faced significant workforce reductions and revenue drops as users move away from transactional, swipe-based experiences. Bumble recently transitioned to a private company following a substantial loss in market value, while Tinder has begun hosting in-person events to combat the perceived lack of depth in digital interactions. A 2026 Harris poll indicates that three-quarters of Americans believe dating apps have made romance feel transactional.
