Dating apps adopt facial recognition to combat fake profiles

Dating applications are increasingly implementing facial recognition and “human verified” systems to combat the rise of fake profiles, scams, and AI-generated content. These measures aim to ensure that accounts are managed by real individuals rather than bots or bad actors.

Tinder, owned by Match Group, has introduced the Face Check system, which utilizes video, liveness verification, and 3D authentication. This tool is mandatory for new users and is being expanded to existing accounts in markets such as the United States and the United Kingdom. Match Group reported that 98% of its content moderation actions in 2025 were related to fake accounts, scams, and spam. The company stated that the system stores an encrypted map of facial geometry rather than the actual images used during the process.

Another approach involves World ID, developed by Tools for Humanity. This system uses a device called an Orb to scan a user’s iris to create a digital identity. This technology provides a “human verified” badge and is being integrated into platforms like Tinder as an optional feature. According to the developer, data is processed locally on the user's device and deleted immediately after capture to ensure privacy.
