Nepal floods trigger high alert in Bihar as Gandak River rises
Authorities in India and Nepal have issued high-level alerts following severe flooding and the threat of flash floods. In Nepal, sudden water level increases in the Bhote Koshi River and potential Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) activity have caused significant destruction, including reported deaths and landslides.
In India, the state of Bihar is on high alert as the Gandak River faces a potential surge in water flow, with waves estimated to reach up to 3 meters. Bihar Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit has chaired high-level meetings to coordinate rescue and relief efforts. District Magistrates in sensitive areas, including West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Saran, Muzaffarpur, and Vaishali, have been instructed to maintain constant vigilance.
To manage the water flow, the Water Resources Department has directed the opening of gates at the Gandak Barrage and associated canals. Emergency response teams, including the NDRF and SDRF, are being deployed to high-risk districts such as Gopalganj and Muzaffarpur to ensure preparedness for any sudden inundation.
