Dave Filoni addresses status of scrapped Star Wars film ‘The Hunt for Ben Solo’

Dave Filoni, Lucasfilm co-president and Chief Creative Officer, addressed the status of the scrapped Star Wars film, ‘The Hunt for Ben Solo,’ during the D23 2026 Disney Entertainment Showcase. When asked about the project, Filoni stated, “We’re not making that picture right now,” and added, “It’s not here, you won’t find it here. The force is not with us in that regard.”

The proposed film was a character-driven project developed over approximately two years by actor Adam Driver and director Steven Soderbergh. It was intended to explore a redemption arc for the character Ben Solo (Kylo Ren) following the events of ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.’

Despite support from former Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and organized fan campaigns—including banner planes and digital advertisements—Disney leadership, including CEO Bob Iger, reportedly declined the project. Driver previously noted that executives struggled with the concept because the character had already died in the previous film. While Filoni’s comments did not explicitly cancel the project forever, they confirmed it is not currently in development.
