Dave Grohl reflects on Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ success
Dave Grohl has revealed that he did not initially view Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ as a standout single. In a recent interview with Mojo, the Foo Fighters frontman noted that he originally considered the track to be just another song the band was working on, believing instead that ‘In Bloom’ or ‘Lithium’ would become the major hits from the album Nevermind.
Grohl recalled that the band only became aware of the song’s massive impact when they arrived at performance venues and encountered unexpected crowds. He described the band remaining in a ‘little bubble’ while the music video received significant airplay, only noticing the shift in scale through the ‘chaos’ at their live shows.
