Dave Mustaine discusses Megadeth history and farewell tour

Dave Mustaine has provided new insights into the history of Megadeth and the departure of former bassist David Ellefson. In his memoirs, titled ‘In My Darkest Hour’, Mustaine suggests that the 2021 scandal involving explicit videos was not the primary cause of Ellefson’s exit, but rather an accelerant to a relationship that was already fractured. Mustaine describes a decades-long history marked by musical collaboration, addiction, and personal tensions, noting that the two had grown apart long before the controversy.

Mustaine also addressed the power dynamics within the band, asserting that he has always maintained creative control over Megadeth. This follows a period where Ellefson had viewed the group as Mustaine’s solo project following his return to the band in 2010 as a salaried musician rather than a partner.

Additionally, Mustaine has discussed the band’s future, noting that he is preparing for a farewell tour. He reflected on the creation of their final album, mentioning that personal illness during the recording process prompted him to consider his legacy and the importance of retiring with dignity.
