Dave Plummer releases TMOG, a new cross-platform system monitor

Dave Plummer, the developer of the original Windows Task Manager from the mid-1990s, has released a new system monitoring application called TMOG (Task Manager OG). Developed using Claude Code by feeding the AI a 107-page specification, the tool is designed to provide a clear view of system performance to help users understand why a computer may be slow or consuming excessive battery.

Unlike many modern utilities, TMOG is built with a shared C++ core and utilizes native front-ends for different operating systems: Direct2D for Windows, Swift/AppKit for macOS, and Qt 6 for Linux. This approach avoids the bloat associated with web-based shells or Electron. The application features a real-time dashboard for monitoring CPU, memory, disk, network, and energy usage, along with 60 Hz animated meters for smoother visual updates.

A key feature of the Pro version, priced at approximately $39.95, is the ‘Flight Recorder,’ which allows users to record and replay telemetry to troubleshoot past system slowdowns. The software also offers a retro-inspired aesthetic with various color themes and a pop-out mini-mode.
