Brazil: Legislative leaders call for peace following presidential elections
Following the second round of presidential elections, Brazilian Senate President Davi Alcolumbre and Chamber of Deputies President Hugo Motta issued a joint call for national pacification and respect for the electoral results. Speaking at the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Alcolumbre emphasized that the sovereign vote consolidates Brazilian democracy and urged all citizens and institutions to prioritize responsibility and peace.
Hugo Motta praised the collective effort of the electoral justice system, the press, and society in ensuring fair elections. TSE President Minister Kassio Nunes Marques reported that the voting process proceeded normally, noting that only 900 electronic voting machines—approximately 0.18% of the total—required replacement, with no recorded instances of paper ballot voting.
In the political aftermath, Senator Tereza Cristina announced that the opposition would remain mobilized to monitor the incoming administration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Meanwhile, newly elected Federal Deputy Edinho Araújo also called for the recognition of the results, suggesting that future political discourse should shift from campaign attacks toward national development and social challenges.
