David Bailey discusses transition to New York Jets

New York Jets rookie defensive end David Bailey is adjusting to the professional level following his selection as the second overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. After a dominant collegiate career at Texas Tech, where he co-led the FBS with 14.5 sacks, Bailey has experienced a transitional start to his NFL career.

Through his first four games, Bailey has recorded 11 quarterback pressures, tying him for the lead among all rookies, though his sack production has slowed since Week 2. The Jets have also utilized him in pass coverage, a departure from his role as an everydown pass rusher in college.

Bailey stated that he is not focused on external expectations, noting, “I’m probably just more worried about like how I can help the team.” He emphasized the challenges of adjusting to the increased level of competition and learning new defensive schemes and teammates.
