David Bell files $300 million lawsuit over alleged botched surgery
Former Cleveland Browns wide receiver David Bell has filed a lawsuit seeking more than $300 million in damages against the Jefferson Health System and 14 other defendants. The complaint, filed in Philadelphia County, alleges that medical professionals misrepresented MRI findings to persuade Bell to undergo a core muscle repair procedure for which he was allegedly an unsuitable candidate.
Bell’s legal team claims the surgery resulted in a severe femoral artery injury that required emergency vascular treatment. Attorneys described the intervention as “life-saving but career-ending,” alleging the complication ended his professional football career and posed a risk to his life or limb. The lawsuit also accuses the defendants of participating in a financial scheme related to the procedure.
Bell, a former third-round pick from Purdue, played three seasons with the Browns. While he suffered a dislocated hip in September 2024, the lawsuit concerns a separate medical issue that led to his retirement in October 2025.
