David Benavidez prepares for Cieslak fight amid Opetaia speculation

David Benavidez is preparing for a scheduled fight against WBC champion Michal Cieslak on December 12, a bout expected to be the final fight on his current contract with Premier Boxing Champions. While the Cieslak matchup is set, discussions continue regarding a potential high-profile clash between Benavidez and Jai Opetaia, possibly as far out as May 2027.

Sparring partner Daniel Blancas expressed confidence in Benavidez, predicting that his speed and explosiveness would carry over to the cruiserweight division in a fight against Opetaia. However, trainer Abel Sanchez has raised questions regarding Benavidez's career trajectory. Sanchez argued that Benavidez should prioritize fights against top-tier contenders to strengthen his standing, rather than facing opponents like Cieslak whom he characterized as less recognizable to the broader boxing audience.
