David Benavidez targeted for major cruiserweight matchups

Boxing figures and promoters are discussing the future trajectory of cruiserweight fighter David Benavidez. Benavidez is scheduled to face WBC cruiserweight champion Michal Cieslak on December 12 in Phoenix, Arizona, as he seeks to add a third belt to his collection following his victory over Gilberto Ramirez.

Terence Crawford has suggested that Benavidez should prioritize a matchup against undefeated fighter Jai Opetaia. Meanwhile, Zuffa Boxing head Dana White has expressed significant interest in working with Benavidez, noting that the fighter’s aggressive style would be a strong draw for their Paramount+ audience.

While Benavidez is set to pursue the Cieslak fight, his long-term availability remains subject to his existing agreement with Sampson Lewkowicz and PBC. If Benavidez succeeds in December, a potential bout against Opetaia could be ordered for a subsequent event, possibly around the Cinco De Mayo period.
