Jose Benavidez Sr. has signaled a potential cruiserweight matchup between his son, David Benavidez, and former IBF champion Jai Opetaia, targeting May 2027 for the bout.

Benavidez Sr. has actively sought to initiate discussions, including sending messages to Turki Alalshikh proposing the fight for Cinco de Mayo weekend. He also reached out to Opetaia via Instagram to request contact information for his representatives, though he noted that his messages had not yet received a response.

This proposal marks a shift in stance for the Benavidez camp, which previously expressed skepticism regarding Opetaia’s drawing power and business viability. A significant hurdle remains the promotional divide, as Opetaia recently joined Zuffa Boxing, a move David Benavidez has previously objected to.

Before this matchup can materialize, David Benavidez is scheduled to defend his cruiserweight titles against Michal Cieslak on December 12, 2026.
