David Byrne warns of potential risks regarding artificial intelligence

Musician David Byrne has expressed significant concerns regarding the trajectory of artificial intelligence, suggesting that the technology “is not going to end well.” In a recent interview with i-D Magazine, the former Talking Heads frontman noted that while AI can serve as a beneficial tool for specific tasks—such as analyzing spreadsheets or assisting medical professionals in detecting melanoma—he fears its broader impact on society.

Byrne highlighted the risk of technological dependency, specifically citing students who use AI to complete assignments without actually acquiring knowledge. He also voiced concerns regarding the potential for AI systems to bypass safety constraints or deceive their human supervisors, a scenario he described as an inevitable outcome of current trends. Despite his pessimism about the technology, Byrne expressed confidence in the ability of certain groups of people to solve problems and mitigate these challenges.
