David Corenswet discusses physical training for Mr. Irrelevant
Actor David Corenswet has discussed the differing physical demands of his roles in the upcoming Superman film and the biographical sports drama Mr. Irrelevant. While his preparation for Superman focused on strength training, weight gain, and stunt work for flying scenes, his role in Mr. Irrelevant required a transition to professional athlete conditioning.
In Mr. Irrelevant, Corenswet portrays John Tuggle, a New York Giants running back and the final pick of the 1983 NFL Draft. The actor noted that the functional training and heavy sprinting required for the role led to him suffering from shin splints, a challenge he did not face while preparing for the superhero role. To prepare for the part, Corenswet worked with a middle-school football coach to better understand the sport.
Directed by Jonathan Levine, Mr. Irrelevant stars Corenswet alongside Isabel May and Michael Shannon. The film is scheduled for release on December 25.
