David Coulthard criticizes presence of families in F1 paddock

Former Formula 1 World Champion David Coulthard has criticized the increasing presence of families and pets in the racing paddock. Speaking on the ‘Up to Speed’ podcast, Coulthard specifically referenced Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc, noting that the presence of a spouse, a baby on the way, and a dog at Grand Prix events feels excessive for such a serious and dangerous sport.

Coulthard remarked, “My opinion is that it is a bit much, sincerely it is not a weekend picnic, is it? It is a Grand Prix, it is something serious, dangerous.” He added that his perspective might simply be a result of belonging to an older generation.

In response to these comments, Brittny Button, wife of former champion Jenson Button, defended the trend. She stated that the paddock has not historically been a welcoming place for women and viewed the increasing inclusion of partners and families as a “great and positive change.”

Regarding Ferrari, Coulthard noted that the team has secured two of the best drivers in the world and must now focus on managing them effectively.
