David Crowley faces criticism over Milwaukee County tax record

Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley is facing criticism from political opponents regarding his campaign advertisements and fiscal record as he pursues a gubernatorial bid. Opponents, including Americans for Prosperity-Wisconsin and Wisconsin Right Now, claim his campaign ads regarding affordability omit significant tax increases.

Critics point to a recent Milwaukee County budget that included a property tax levy increase of approximately $12 million. They also highlight Crowley’s role in implementing a sales tax in Milwaukee County and his sponsorship of legislation allowing Wisconsin counties to raise sales taxes.

Financial concerns for the county include a projected $46.7 million deficit for 2026, which could grow to $168.7 million by 2031 without intervention. Additionally, critics have noted that while taxes have risen, service levels and educational outcomes, such as literacy rates in Milwaukee Public Schools, have faced challenges.
