David Dhawan: From aspiring actor to Bollywood’s ‘King of Comedy’

Filmmaker David Dhawan, often referred to as the ‘King of Comedy’ in Bollywood, is being recognized on his birthday for his transformative career path. Originally aspiring to be an actor, Dhawan attended the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) but realized acting was not his calling after observing other performers.

He pivoted to film editing, starting with the 1978 film ‘Laadli’, and later transitioned into directing with the 1989 film ‘Taakatwar’. His directorial debut marked the beginning of a highly successful partnership with actor Govinda, which defined a new era of comedy in Hindi cinema during the 1990s.

Born in Agartala and raised in Kanpur, Dhawan comes from a family with cinematic ties; his brother is actor Anil Dhawan and his nephew is actor Siddharth Dhawan. He also launched his son, Varun Dhawan, into the film industry.
