David Fair, co-founder of Half Japanese, has died

David Fair, co-founder of the influential experimental rock band Half Japanese, has died. His passing was announced by Thick Syrup Records and Jeff Feuerzeig, the director of the band’s documentary, ‘HALF JAPANESE: The Band That Would Be King’.

David co-founded the group with his brother, Jad Fair, in the mid-1970s in Uniontown, Maryland. Known for a unique, lo-fi, and idiosyncratic DIY sound, the band earned respect from major artists such as Sonic Youth and Nirvana. While David left the band in 1987, he returned for various periods, including the recording of their 2014 comeback album, ‘Overjoyed’.

Producer Don Fleming noted that David had been receiving treatment for cancer in recent years. The band’s discography includes notable works such as the 1977 EP ‘Calling All Girls’ and the 2025 studio album ‘Adventure’.
