David Ferrer to step down as Spain Davis Cup captain after 2026
David Ferrer has announced that he will step down as the captain of Spain's Davis Cup team at the conclusion of the 2026 season. Citing 'purely personal' reasons and a desire to begin a new professional stage, Ferrer will not fulfill the remaining year of his contract, which was originally set to run through 2027.
Ferrer, who has led the national team since 2023, will complete his tenure by guiding the Spanish squad through the upcoming Davis Cup Finals in Bologna, Italy, scheduled for late November. He expressed gratitude to the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET) for the opportunity to fulfill his dream of captaining his country.
RFET President Miguel Díaz praised Ferrer's contribution, noting his success in mentoring young players and his extraordinary work from the bench. Ferrer, a former world No. 3, remains focused on the upcoming challenge in Bologna and the goal of securing the trophy for Spain.
