David Fincher to end exclusive Netflix deal in 2027
Director David Fincher has decided not to renew his exclusive overall deal with Netflix, which is set to expire in early 2027. The decision marks the end of a 13-year creative partnership that began with the launch of ‘House of Cards’ in 2013.
Fincher is not reportedly jumping to a rival studio for an exclusive arrangement, meaning he may still collaborate with Netflix on a project-by-project basis. His departure follows a trend of high-profile creators, including Noah Baumbach, the Duffer Brothers, and Shawn Levy, moving away from the streaming giant.
Reports suggest the split may be influenced by shifts in Netflix’s strategy, including a move toward lower-budget films and changes in leadership. Fincher has also expressed interest in more traditional theatrical releases, a contrast to the limited cinema runs of his recent Netflix films like ‘Mank’ and ‘The Killer’.
His upcoming project, ‘The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth’—a sequel to Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ starring Brad Pitt—is expected to be one of his final major works with the platform. The film is scheduled for an IMAX theatrical release on November 25, 2026, before arriving on Netflix in December.
