David Hallyday addresses Johnny Hallyday's estate and legacy
Musician David Hallyday has addressed the public perception regarding the estate of his late father, French rock icon Johnny Hallyday. During an appearance on France 2, Hallyday commented on the legal battles that followed his father's death in 2017, noting a discrepancy between public speculation and the actual reality of the inheritance. He stated, “There is what people think and the story we make up, and then there is the reality when you are on the other side of the barrier,” adding that “there is not much left in the end.”
The singer, who is currently concluding his tribute tour “Requiem pour un fou,” emphasized that his focus remains on his father's musical legacy rather than material assets. He noted that he prefers to value the personal qualities and music passed down to him over royalties or property.
The inheritance dispute previously involved David Hallyday and his half-sister, Laura Smet, contesting the terms of a will drafted in the United States, which had designated Johnny Hallyday's widow, Laeticia Hallyday, and her daughters as primary beneficiaries. A final legal agreement has since settled the succession matters.
