David Jones faces supplier disputes over overdue payments

David Jones is facing significant tension with its suppliers due to extensive overdue payments. Accent Group, the owner of Platypus Shoes and Athlete’s Foot, recently threatened to exercise default rights against the retailer following months of unpaid bills. To manage the situation, David Jones paid Accent Group, though the company now supplies only on a cash-on-delivery basis.

The retailer has proposed a 20-week payment schedule to its suppliers, consisting of small initial payments with increasing monthly installments. Under this plan, most suppliers would be fully paid by November or December. However, concerns remain that smaller suppliers with less leverage may not receive favorable terms compared to larger entities.

This financial strain coincides with a shift in brand partnerships. Several designer labels, including Effie Kats, Acler, Significant Other, and Aston Studios, have moved their contracts to competitor Myer. Additionally, R. M. Williams ended its relationship with David Jones nine months ago. While David Jones reported a profit for the nine months leading to March, declining consumer sentiment driven by interest rates and fuel prices continues to pressure the retail sector.
