David Lammy eyes London mayoralty if Sadiq Khan does not run

Former Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy is reportedly considering a bid for the London mayoralty in the 2028 election, should current Mayor Sadiq Khan decide not to seek a fourth term.

Sources suggest Lammy believes the Labour Party is well-positioned for the race due to declining support for the Green Party's Zack Polanski. Lammy, the MP for Tottenham, has previously advocated for linking affordable housing to average local earnings, proposing caps on private-sector rents and higher council tax bands for large properties.

Sadiq Khan, who has served as mayor since 2016, stated he would decide his future candidacy next year. While Khan noted his "tank is full" and he remains full of ideas, he continues to face criticism regarding knife crime and motoring restrictions, such as 20mph zones.
