David Lammy raises funds to defend Tottenham seat and eyes London mayoralty

David Lammy, the MP for Tottenham, held a fundraising dinner on September 9 to secure resources for his parliamentary seat. During the event, Lammy addressed shifting demographics in his constituency, noting that changing populations and support for the Green Party have turned what was once a safe seat into a potentially marginal one.

Lammy cited electoral projections suggesting his majority could drop significantly from 15,000 to approximately 1,000 votes. He attributed this shift to regeneration in London and the influence of voters he described as “hipsters” who are moving toward the Green Party. To combat this, he stated a need for a dedicated community organiser to work street-to-street within the constituency.

Beyond parliamentary defense, the event served as a potential testing ground for a future run for Mayor of London. Party sources indicated that Lammy may be scoping out a campaign for City Hall should Sadiq Khan decide not to seek a fourth term in 2028. Lammy has not explicitly ruled out a mayoral bid but maintained that the primary purpose of the fundraiser was to defend his current seat.
