David Lee Roth's Solo Albums Reveal Musicians' Challenges and Reflections
Guitarist Jason Becker recalled joining David Lee Roth's 1991 solo album A Little Ain’t Enough shortly after being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Doctors gave him a two‑to‑five‑year prognosis, and by the album’s release he was already unable to tour. Becker now composes music via computer and communicates using eye‑signal technology, noting he wishes he could have given the record his full effort.
Bassist Billy Sheehan departed Roth’s band during the 1988 solo album Skyscraper, citing the shift toward a slick, radio‑friendly sound that changed the group’s collaborative atmosphere. Sheehan described recording each part separately, a contrast to the earlier, more communal sessions on Eat ’Em and Smile. Skyscraper reached No. 6 on the Billboard 200 and sold over two million copies, marking a commercial success despite the internal tensions.
