David Maraga gives President Ruto seven days to release police reforms report

Chief Justice Emeritus David Maraga has issued a seven-day ultimatum to President William Ruto to release the unedited report from the National Taskforce on Police Reforms. The report, which was submitted in November 2023, contains recommendations aimed at restoring the independence of the National Police Service (NPS) and addressing issues of police impunity and systematic brutality.

In a letter addressed to the President, Maraga accused the administration of failing to implement these recommendations for nearly three years. He cited instances of organized violence and partisan policing in areas such as Homa Bay, Keismu, Ol Kalou, and Witima, attributing these incidents to the ‘State Capture’ of the NPS. Maraga warned that if the complete report is not published within the week, he will exercise his rights under Article 35 of the Constitution to release the original copy himself.
