Former Australian Army lawyer and whistleblower David McBride has been released from prison after being granted parole. McBride served a 27-month non-parole period following a sentence handed down by the ACT Supreme Court in May 2024.

McBride, a former major with high-level security clearance, pleaded guilty to charges related to the handling of secret Australian Defence Force documents. The documents, which included information regarding investigations into special forces soldiers and civilian deaths in Afghanistan, were leaked to the press.

Attorney-General Michelle Rowland’s office confirmed the parole was granted but declined to provide specific details regarding the matter. McBride will remain under supervision for the remaining three years of his sentence. According to reports, McBride is also currently being treated for early-stage lung cancer.
