Portugal addresses housing shortages, health concerns, and infrastructure issues
Portugal is addressing several domestic issues ranging from public health to infrastructure and housing. A study involving 15,000 patients at the Entre Douro e Vouga Health Unit recommends mandatory vaccination for those over 60 against Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) to prevent high mortality rates among seniors.
Regarding the economy, the Governor of the Banco de Portugal, Álvaro Santos Pereira, warned that the country lacks the necessary urgency to tackle the housing crisis, noting a shortage of approximately 300,000 homes. Meanwhile, in Matosinhos, the Leixões mobile bridge has been closed due to technical issues with the northern deck during modernization works.
Cultural and environmental initiatives are also active. October 7 marks National Castles Day, celebrated with heritage activities such as a treasure hunt at Penela Castle. Additionally, a cyclist has begun a 4,700-kilometer journey from Viana do Castelo to Turkey to deliver a municipal commitment letter regarding climate-friendly mobility to the COP31 conference.
