David Munrow: Pioneer of the early music revival
David Munrow, a central figure in the 20th-century revival of medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque music, is being commemorated for his contributions to musical heritage. Born in Birmingham on August 12, 1942, Munrow was instrumental in rediscovering forgotten musical works from the 10th to the 18th centuries.
In 1967, Munrow co-founded the Early Music Consort of London alongside Christopher Hogwood. The ensemble spent a decade conducting research, restoring scores, and producing educational radio and television programs, such as ‘Music for younger listeners’, to promote early music to broader audiences.
Munrow passed away on May 15, 1976, at the age of 33.
