David Popovici calls for supporter unity following national team setbacks

Romanian swimmer David Popovici addressed the relationship between athletes and supporters during a speech at the Impact SEE event. Speaking as he resumes training for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, the world-class swimmer discussed the pressures of high-performance sports and the challenges faced following the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Popovici specifically commented on the public reaction to the Romanian national football team's recent poor performance in the Nations League, following losses to Sweden and Bosnia-Herzegovina. He argued that supporters should maintain a sense of unity with athletes regardless of the outcome. He stated that if fans claim victory as ‘we won’ during successes, they should not distance themselves or turn to criticism when results are disappointing, noting that it is wrong to treat athletes poorly when they are attempting to represent the country.
