David Rivera sentenced to 10 years for secret Venezuelan lobbying

Former U.S. Congressman David Rivera has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for his role in a secret $50 million lobbying campaign conducted on behalf of the Venezuelan government. The sentencing, delivered by Judge Melissa Damian in Miami, follows a May conviction where a jury found Rivera and political consultant Esther Nuhfer guilty of conspiracy to commit money laundering and violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA).

Prosecutors established that between 2017 and 2018, Rivera used his political connections to influence U.S. policy toward Venezuela. The campaign was funded through a contract with a U.S.-based affiliate of PDVSA, Venezuela’s state-run oil company. During the trial, high-profile figures including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Representative Pete Sessions testified, stating they were unaware of Rivera’s clandestine activities.

Judge Damian characterized the actions as a matter of “greed and betrayal.” In addition to the prison term, the court ordered the forfeiture of several of Rivera’s properties in Doral and the Florida Keys. Rivera’s legal team has announced plans to appeal the sentence.
