David Rubenstein notes high MLB owner profits amid lockout concerns

Baltimore Orioles owner David Rubenstein has commented on the high profitability of Major League Baseball ownership, noting that his peers are earning more through team ownership than he makes in private equity. Rubenstein, who co-founded The Carlyle Group, purchased a majority stake in the Orioles in 2024 for $1.725 billion, stating his primary motivation was philanthropic.

These comments come amid growing concerns regarding a potential MLB lockout following the 2026 season. A labor dispute between owners and the MLBPA could lead to the cancellation or postponement of key offseason events, including the Winter Meetings and the draft lottery. If a resolution is not reached, there is a possibility that no major league baseball would be played during the 2027 season.
