Australian Greens elect David Shoebridge as new leader

Senator David Shoebridge has been elected as the new leader of the Australian Greens, following the decision by former leader Larissa Waters to step down to prioritize her recovery from kidney disease. Shoebridge, a former Sydney barrister and veteran parliamentarian, will lead the party alongside newly elected deputy leader Senator Steph Hodgins-May.

Shoebridge has emphasized a platform focused on tax system reform, specifically targeting corporate wealth and the number of large companies that pay no corporate tax. He has also campaigned against the AUKUS nuclear submarine program and growing corporate influence in Parliament. Hodgins-May, who secured the deputy leadership after a competitive vote, is noted for her focus on representing younger generations and her experience in political campaigning.
