David Shoebridge leads Australian Greens amid internal unrest
Following the resignation of Larissa Waters, David Shoebridge has assumed leadership of the Australian Greens. Since taking the role, Shoebridge has proposed several ambitious policy shifts, including ending the alliance with the United States, nationalizing major grocery retailers Coles and Woolworths, and establishing a statutory authority to regulate grocery prices.
However, the leadership transition has been marked by internal friction. Mehreen Faruqi, a rival in the leadership contest, has criticized the election process and called for membership-wide voting, stating she intends to pursue “radical action outside the constraints of the leadership team”. Shoebridge has attempted to mitigate these tensions by characterizing all members of the federal Greens party room as frontbenchers.
