David Surkamp, frontman of Pavlov’s Dog, dies at 73
David Surkamp, the founding member, lead singer, and guitarist of the progressive rock band Pavlov’s Dog, has died at the age of 73. His unexpected passing occurred on October 13.
Surkamp was widely recognized for his distinctive, high-pitched vocal style that became a defining characteristic of the band. Formed in St. Louis in the early 1970s, Pavlov’s Dog gained prominence with their 1975 debut album, ‘Pampered Menial’, featuring notable tracks such as ‘Julia’ and ‘Late November’. The group followed this with ‘At the Sound of the Bell’ in 1976.
Band member Abbie Steiling announced the news, describing Surkamp as the band’s ‘creative force’ and a ‘consummate performer’ who came alive on stage. Steiling noted that Surkamp left behind a legacy of artistry that touched listeners across generations. No official cause of death has been disclosed. Surkamp is survived by his children, Saylor and Evan. His wife, Sara, who also performed with the band, passed away in late 2025.
