David Valadao faces political test as Latino voters shift

Representative David Valadao faces a significant political challenge in his Central California district as shifting voting patterns among Latino residents emerge. Two out of three voters in his rural, agricultural district are Hispanic, a demographic that has shown signs of disenchantment with President Donald Trump.

AP-NORC polling indicates that Trump’s national approval rating among Hispanic adults fell by 18 percentage points between March 2025 and July 2026, a decline twice as steep as the 9-point drop seen among U.S. adults overall. Economic factors, including rising costs for groceries, gas, and fertilizer, alongside declining healthcare funding, are cited as contributing factors to this shift.

Valadao, a dairyman who has historically overcome voter registration deficits by focusing on local issues like water rights, is attempting to maintain strategic distance from the President. While his campaign literature emphasizes putting “people before political parties,” his reelection prospects remain closely tied to the broader Republican leadership.
