David Warner convicted of drink-driving in Sydney court
Former Australian cricket star David Warner has been convicted of mid-range drink-driving at the Waverley Local Court. The 39-year-old was fined 1,500 Australian dollars and ordered to install an alcohol interlock device in his vehicle for 12 months.
The incident occurred on Easter Sunday in April when Warner was driving a van in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. According to court records, Warner noticed a random breath-testing site and attempted to switch seats with a female passenger before being stopped. A subsequent test revealed a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.104, which is more than twice the legal limit. The court noted the offense was aggravated because children were also in the vehicle at the time.
Judge Clare Farnan stated that while Warner is unlikely to re-offend, drink-driving remains a significant factor in New South Wales traffic accidents. Warner’s defense lawyer, Awais Ahmad, argued that the global media coverage of the incident had caused profound consequences, including affecting Warner’s commercial opportunities in regions with strict non-drinking cultures, such as India and Bangladesh. The conviction has also raised questions regarding Warner’s continued role as captain of the Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League.
