Davis County cancels 2026 varsity football season

The Davis County Community School District has announced the cancellation of its 2026 varsity football season, citing low participation numbers and concerns regarding player safety. District officials, including Superintendent Megan Christiansen and Head Coach Phil Lite, stated that the decision was made to prioritize the health and well-being of student-athletes.

To rebuild the program, the Mustangs will instead focus on a junior varsity-only schedule, which is expected to be announced later this year. The cancellation has created scheduling challenges for several nearby programs. Centerville has added a game against Creston to fill a gap, while Pekin and Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont will now face each other in a Week 0 game on August 21st.

Other schools in Class 2A, District 7, including Albia, Monroe-PCM, Pella Christian, and South Tama County, as well as Chariton and Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, are also facing open dates on their schedules due to the sudden change.
