Dawson College community marks 20 years since shooting
Survivors, family members, and the Montreal community gathered at Dawson College’s Peace Garden to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the September 13, 2006, shooting. The attack resulted in the death of 18-year-old Anastasia De Sousa and left 19 others wounded.
During the ceremony, survivors reflected on the lasting impact of the tragedy. Hayder Kadhim, who was shot in the head, neck, and calf during the incident, spoke about the importance of community care and finding inspiration in the memory of De Sousa. Another survivor, Meaghan Hennegan, noted that the passage of time has transitioned remembrance into advocacy, specifically regarding her work for stronger gun-control laws.
The commemoration brought together alumni, first responders, and relatives to honor those affected by the event that occurred two decades ago.
