Dawson College community marks 20 years since fatal shooting

The Dawson College community in Montreal gathered to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the September 13, 2006, shooting that killed 18-year-old Anastasia De Sousa and injured 19 others. Survivors and family members met at the college’s Peace Garden to reflect on the tragedy and the resilience of those affected.

In conjunction with the anniversary, the advocacy group Dawson Families for Gun Control issued an open letter to the federal government. The group is urging the government to complete several key firearms measures, including finishing the ban on assault-style firearms, closing loopholes regarding large-capacity magazines, and strengthening oversight of handgun freeze exemptions.

Survivors noted that while progress has been made, such as the federal handgun freeze, significant gaps remain. They specifically highlighted the ongoing amnesty period in the federal buyback program and called for stricter national standards for sport shooter exemptions.
