DAX companies report record profits amid job cuts and rising executive pay

German DAX-listed companies reported record-breaking financial results for the second quarter, with total revenue reaching approximately 463 billion euros and operating profit (EBIT) rising nearly 16 percent to 52.6 billion euros. This growth was largely driven by specific sectors experiencing a boom, including defense, artificial intelligence, and data centers, as well as strong performances in the banking and insurance industries.

However, these record figures mask a significant economic divide. While certain sectors thrived, the automotive industry faced a downturn, with operating profits dropping by 12 percent. This period of high profitability coincided with substantial job losses, as DAX companies reduced their workforce by approximately 41,000 positions over the past year.

Additionally, analysis of the 2025 fiscal year reveals a widening gap in compensation. The average remuneration for DAX executives rose to 3.9 million euros, which is 42 times the average employee's salary. Some top executives, including SAP's Christian Klein and Deutsche Bank's Christian Sewing, exceeded the 10 million euro compensation threshold.
