Germany economic growth forecasts raised by major institutes
Major economic institutes have significantly raised their growth forecasts for the German economy. The Ifo Institute now expects a GDP increase of 1.4 percent for 2026, while the Kiel Institute (IfW) and the RWI forecast 1.3 percent. The DIW Berlin also increased its estimate to 1.2 percent for the current year.
Experts attribute this improved outlook to strong foreign demand and increased government spending on infrastructure, climate, and defense, which have helped mitigate the impact of energy price shocks. However, the recovery remains fragile due to weak private demand and structural challenges like high energy costs and bureaucracy.
In the financial markets, the DAX index experienced volatility, falling for three consecutive days to close at 25,839.33 points due to rising interest rates and oil prices, before showing signs of stabilization. Meanwhile, Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel expressed optimism regarding growth but warned that abandoning the Euro would be 'extremely dangerous' for Germany's prosperity.
