Türkiye energy sector focuses on wind power and transport efficiency
Türkiye is prioritizing energy efficiency and renewable capacity to reduce reliance on imports. In the transport sector, which accounts for approximately one-quarter of the country's total energy consumption, officials noted that 78% of this energy is used in road transport. Experts suggest that a mere 3% increase in road transport efficiency could save nearly $1.5 billion annually, while a 10% increase could exceed $5 billion in savings.
In the renewable sector, Türkiye's wind power capacity has reached 15,900 megawatts. According to the Turkish Wind Energy Association (TÜREB), every 1,000 megawatts of installed wind capacity can reduce natural gas imports by approximately $250 million per year. If wind capacity reaches the targeted 48 gigawatts, annual natural gas import savings could reach between $10 billion and $12 billion. Renewable sources have already accounted for over 40% of Türkiye's electricity generation in recent years, exceeding 60% in the first eight months of this year.
