DAX ownership shifts as institutional investors reach record 60.2 percent share
A study titled ‘Wem gehört der DAX?’ by S&P Global Market Intelligence and the German Investor Relations Association (DIRK) reveals a significant shift in the ownership structure of the German stock index. As of December 31, 2025, institutional investors controlled 60.2 percent of the DAX free float, marking an increase of 2.4 percentage points from the previous year.
The total free float rose to 78.8 percent, up from 75.2 percent the year prior. This shift is largely driven by the rapid growth of passive index funds, which are attracting capital at rates not seen in years. This trend is occurring as strategic investors, including corporations and family-owned holdings, reduce their stakes. Specifically, the share of strategic investors fell by 3.7 percentage points to 21.2 percent.
While private investors increased their share of the free float to 15.7 percent, sovereign wealth funds saw a decrease of 1.0 percentage point, bringing their share to 6.3 percent. The rise in institutional dominance is heavily influenced by automated index-driven flows rather than individual stock selection.
