Daylight saving time changes spark debate over energy and permanence

As daylight saving time ends in Alabama on November 1, the practice of seasonal clock changes continues to face scrutiny regarding its original purpose and modern necessity. While the transition provides an extra hour of sleep, it also results in earlier sunsets and potential disruptions to sleep schedules and driving safety.

In the United States, the Sunshine Protection Act of 2021 has been proposed to make daylight saving time permanent nationwide. Although the House of Representatives passed legislation in July 2026 to eliminate twice-yearly clock changes, the bill requires Senate approval and a presidential signature to become law.

Questions also persist regarding the energy-saving efficacy of daylight saving. Originally introduced to conserve fuel by utilizing more evening daylight, the transition's impact is now debated due to the rise of energy-efficient LED lighting. A 2026 House of Commons Library report noted that the effects on energy demand remain inconclusive, as potential savings in lighting may be offset by shifts in heating and cooling requirements.
