Daylight saving time debate continues over energy and health

The practice of switching to winter time remains a subject of debate despite evidence suggesting minimal energy savings. A 2005 German government study indicated that while less lighting is used in the evenings, increased heating requirements in the mornings often offset these gains.

While daylight saving time can encourage more outdoor activity, the transition causes significant health issues for approximately 32 percent of people. Reported symptoms include fatigue, sleep disturbances, concentration difficulties, and depressive moods, which can lead to increased sick leave.

Eliminating the seasonal clock change requires a unified agreement among all European Union member states to prevent a fragmented system of different time zones across the region.
