Daylight saving time transition approaches in Europe

As the transition to winter time approaches, the shift in daylight saving schedules is impacting both local traditions and biological rhythms across Europe.

In Val-de-Travers, Switzerland, the 22nd edition of ‘Pain des horlogers’ will be held from October 23 to 25. This local tradition features a special bread sold by bakeries Knöpfel, Saveurs Gourmandes, and Vuissoz. To celebrate the extra hour gained during the clock change, sixteen loaves contain a hidden fève, which can be exchanged for 100 Val’ in local currency, totaling 1,600 francs in prizes to support regional merchants.

In France, the transition to winter time on October 25 is noted for its physiological effects. While the shift to winter time is generally better tolerated than the move to summer time, it can still disrupt the internal biological clock located in the hypothalamus. Experts note that the adjustment to circadian rhythms can take anywhere from a day to a week. Vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, night workers, and those with existing sleep disorders, may experience increased fatigue or seasonal depression due to the shift in light exposure and hormonal balance.
