Daylight saving time transition scheduled for October 2026

The transition from daylight saving time to standard time is scheduled for the night of Saturday, October 24, to Sunday, October 25, 2026. At 3:00 AM CEST, clocks will be set back to 2:00 AM CET, providing an extra hour of sleep.

While the practice of changing clocks twice a year remains controversial, the European Parliament voted in 2019 to end seasonal time changes, though implementation has not yet occurred. Public opinion in Germany shows significant opposition to the practice, with approximately three-quarters of citizens considering it unnecessary.

Proponents of daylight saving time argue it allows for better use of natural light, potentially improving quality of life in the evenings. However, the original goal of energy savings through reduced lighting use has not been confirmed in practice, as increased heating needs during cooler mornings and the efficiency of modern lighting have mitigated these effects. Additionally, the time change is often criticized for causing sleep disruptions and a sensation similar to jet lag.
