Daylight saving time transitions in Germany and Austria
Daylight saving time transitions in Germany and Austria continue to be a subject of public discussion and confusion. In 2026, the transition from summer time to Central European Time (CET) will occur on the night of October 24 to October 25, when clocks are set back one hour from 3:00 to 2:00.
Historically, time changes in Germany were implemented during the World Wars to conserve energy, with the current system established in 1980 following the oil crises of the 1970s to utilize daylight more efficiently. While modern digital devices like smartphones and laptops update automatically, manual adjustments are still required for analog watches and older appliances.
A survey conducted by the Market opinion research institute in Austria highlighted generational differences in understanding the change; only 60 percent of 16-to-29-year-olds correctly identified the direction of the clock change, compared to 82 percent of those aged 50 and older.
